Collection: Agustín Lazo Adalid

Agustín Lazo Adalid (1896–1971) was a Mexican artist, playwright, stage designer, and dramaturg. Born in Mexico City, he is credited with introducing Surrealism to Mexican painting. His aesthetic development was shaped by European avant-garde movements during his time abroad in the 1920s and early 1930s.

Lazo's artistic output diverged from the prevailing Mexican muralism of his era, aligning instead with the 'Los Contemporáneos' group. His work in both art and theater exhibited a reciprocal influence; his paintings often explored theatrical themes, while his dramatic productions emphasized visual cues and stage design.

Lazo ceased his artistic and literary activities in 1950, following the death of his long-time partner, the poet Xavier Villaurrutia.
