Collection: Anne Louis Girodet

Anne-Louis Girodet de Roussy-Trioson (1767–1824) was a French painter, illustrator, and writer. Born in Montargis and dying in Paris, he trained under Jacques-Louis David. His work, while rooted in Neoclassicism, participated in the early Romantic movement, exemplifying its first phase.

Girodet developed a precise and clear style, often incorporating elements of eroticism into his compositions. He executed historical and mythological subjects, alongside portraits of members of the Napoleonic family. His approach diverged from his master's strict classicism, imbuing his works with a singular grace and lyricism.

Girodet's oeuvre stands at the threshold between Neoclassicism and Romanticism, prefiguring the latter's expressive qualities. His work was largely overlooked for a period but has been subject to rediscovery in recent decades.
