Johan August Malmström (1829–1901) was a Swedish painter and illustrator. He studied with Thomas Couture in Paris and later became a professor at the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts in Stockholm from 1867 to 1894, serving as its director from 1887 to 1893. Malmström worked in the style of Symbolism, also drawing influence from national romanticism.
His artistic output included country motifs, frequently depicting children, and themes derived from Norse mythology, influenced by Gothicismus. Malmström's painting Grindslanten (1885) presents a typical 19th-century Swedish scene. He also created illustrations for publications such as Frithiofs saga and The Tales of Ensign Stål. Beyond painting, he designed furniture, drew patterns, and worked for Gustavsberg porcelain.
