Collection: Augustus Egg
Augustus Leopold Egg (1816–1863) was a British painter, born in London and active during the Victorian era. He specialized in genre and history painting. Egg was a member of The Clique, a group of artists. His oeuvre includes the modern triptych Past and Present (1858), a work depicting the dissolution of a middle-class Victorian family. He died in Algiers, Algeria.
Egg's genre paintings often explored contemporary social narratives. His triptych Past and Present (1858) exemplifies this, illustrating the disintegration of a Victorian middle-class family through a sequence of domestic scenes. Another work, The Travelling Companions, features two nearly identical female figures, inviting varied interpretations of their relationship and circumstances.
