Collection: Carel de Moor

Carel de Moor (1655–1738) was a Dutch Golden Age painter and etcher, born in Leiden. He received training from Gerard Dou, Frans van Mieris, Abraham Lambertsz. van den Tempel, and Godfried Schalcken. De Moor became a member of the Guild of Saint Luke of Leiden.

De Moor specialized in portraits and genre scenes, working within the tradition of the Leiden 'fijnschilders' (fine painters). His work exemplifies the 'thin manner' characteristic of the Leiden school, often executed in small-scale compositions.

He was one of the founders of the Leiden Drawing Academy. His pupils included Pieter Lyonet, Andrei Matveev, and his son Carel Isaak de Moor, among others.
