Collection: Carl Kahler

Carl Kahler (also spelled Karl Kahler), an Austrian painter born in Linz in 1856 and deceased in San Francisco in 1906, specialized in genre scenes, landscapes, and animal portraiture. He worked in Germany, Australia, and the United States, developing a particular focus on equine and feline subjects.

Kahler is primarily recognized for his detailed paintings of cats. His work My Wife's Lovers (1891), a large composition depicting forty-two cats, became widely reproduced. This painting, measuring 177.8 cm by 258.4 cm, is considered the largest cat painting in existence and achieved a sale price of $826,000 at auction in 2015.

Kahler's life concluded during the 1906 San Francisco earthquake.
