Collection: Charles Christian Nahl

Charles Christian Nahl (born Carl Christian Heinrich Nahl, 1818–1878) was a German-born painter and lithographer. He received training in Kassel, Electorate of Hesse, and spent time in Paris before immigrating to New York City in 1848. Seeking opportunity, he moved to California in 1849, initially participating in the gold rush. He settled in Sacramento until 1852, then in San Francisco, becoming an American painter.

Nahl's artistic output primarily encompassed portraits, California landscapes, and scenes depicting the daily lives of miners and Native Americans. His lithographic and painting work captured the social and physical environment of California during a period of significant change, reflecting his observations of the gold rush era and indigenous communities.
