Collection: Charles Philippe Larivière
Charles Philippe Larivière (1798–1876) was a French academic painter and lithographer, born and active in Paris. Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts under François-Édouard Picot, he specialized in historical, battle, and portrait subjects. His work followed the conventions of 19th-century academic classicism, emphasizing precise draftsmanship, polished finish, and narrative clarity.
Larivière’s paintings and lithographs adhered to the academic canon, particularly in large-scale historical compositions and portraiture. His lithographic work circulated beyond the Salon, though his primary reputation came from oil paintings executed in a controlled, linear style.
The portrait of a woman (ca. 1870s, Victoria and Albert Museum) shows his approach: a restrained palette, meticulous rendering of costume and physiognomy, and an emphasis on psychological reserve over expressive gesture.
