Collection: Charles Théodore Frère

Charles-Théodore Frère (1814–1888) was a French painter born and active in Paris. He received his training at the École des Beaux-Arts. Frère dedicated his career to Orientalist painting, a genre that became his primary focus.

Frère's oeuvre primarily depicted scenes from the Middle East and North Africa, earning him the appellation "Frère Bey." His works include Arabes syriens en voyage (c. 1850s) and Bazar A Beyrouth (1857), which exemplify his engagement with the region's landscapes and daily life. He also produced lithographs, etchings, and drawings for woodcuts.

His artistic family included his younger brother, Pierre-Édouard Frère, who focused on popular life scenes, and his nephew, Charles Edouard Frère, both of whom were also painters.
