Collection: Clarkson Frederick Stanfield
Clarkson Frederick Stanfield (1793–1867) was an English artist recognized for his marine art and landscapes. Born in Sunderland, he initially worked as a sailor before becoming a scenic designer at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, during the Regency era. His artistic output frequently featured Romantic seascapes.
Stanfield's experience at sea informed his detailed and large-scale depictions of maritime subjects. He also produced various landscapes, applying a Romantic sensibility to natural scenery. His background in theatrical design likely influenced his compositional approach in painting.
A member of the Royal Academy, Stanfield maintained close associations with artists such as David Roberts, Edwin Landseer, and Daniel Maclise. He also collaborated with the writer Charles Dickens. His son, George Clarkson Stanfield, followed in his footsteps as a painter.
