Collection: Claude Mellan
Claude Mellan (1598–1688) was a French draughtsman, engraver, and painter, born in Abbeville and active primarily in Paris. He received his artistic training in Rome, where he developed his distinctive approach to printmaking. He worked throughout the Baroque period.
Mellan's technical virtuosity in engraving was a defining characteristic. He developed a method of modelling forms, such as a face, using a single continuous spiral line, a technique exemplified in his engraving The Sudarium of Saint Veronica (1649). He was also a prolific portraitist, creating numerous engraved likenesses.
Mellan was among the first French artist-engravers to produce engraved portraits from his own drawings. His diverse output included an atlas of the Moon, created using the recently invented telescope, showcasing his engagement with scientific observation.
