Collection: Conrad Martens

Conrad Martens (1801 –1878) was an English-born landscape painter. He participated in the second surveying voyage of HMS Beagle from 1833 to 1834, accompanying Charles Darwin for part of the journey. Martens arrived in Australia in 1835 and continued to paint there until his death.

Martens primarily worked as a landscape painter, a focus evident in titles such as Syrian Travel (ca. 1844), Near Dover (1803), and Canterbury (1821). His extensive travels, including his participation in the HMS Beagle voyage, directly influenced his choice of topographical and scenic subjects.
