Collection: Edmund Blair Leighton

Edmund Blair Leighton (1852–1922) was an English painter born and active in London. He trained at University College School and subsequently became a student at the Royal Academy of Arts. Leighton specialized in historical genre scenes, with a particular focus on Regency and medieval subjects. His oeuvre is associated with the Pre-Raphaelite movement, which spanned the mid-to-late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Leighton's artistic methodology, while connected to Pre-Raphaelitism, presented a more naturalistic and less stylized rendering of his subjects. He concentrated on romanticized historical narratives, frequently employing medieval themes. The Honeymoon (1892) exemplifies his engagement with such historical genre. He also produced illustrations, including the frontispiece for Jane Austen's Persuasion (1898).

Leighton exhibited his paintings annually at the Royal Academy from 1878 to 1920, maintaining a consistent presence within the London art establishment throughout his career.
