Collection: Eduard Charlemont

Eduard Charlemont (1848–1906) was an Austrian painter born and active in Vienna. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and specialized in portraiture and genre painting, working primarily in oil.

His career spanned the late 19th century, a period when academic classicism coexisted with the rise of Symbolist and Secessionist movements in Central Europe.

Charlemont’s portraits, including those of Prince Georg and Prince Alexander (ca. 1870–1879), feature smooth modeling and a restrained palette. His genre scenes depict theatrical or aristocratic subjects, with detailed costumes and interiors. His work also included orientalist and historical themes, aligning with contemporary cultural trends.
