Eduard Gebhardt

Franz Karl Eduard von Gebhardt (1838 –1925) was a Baltic German painter and professor at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. Born in Järva-Jaani Parish, Estonia, he later died in Düsseldorf, Germany. Gebhardt was a significant figure in portrait and historical painting within the Düsseldorf School.

Gebhardt specialized in historical scenes and portraiture, aligning with the historicist approach prevalent in the Düsseldorf School. As a professor at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, he contributed to the academic tradition of art education, shaping subsequent generations of artists.

His contributions to the arts were recognized through memberships in various prestigious art academies, including those in Antwerp, Berlin, Brussels, Munich, and Vienna.
