Collection: Edward Armitage

Edward Armitage (1817–1896) was an English painter born in London. Active during the Victorian era, he was a history painter whose work primarily focused on historical, classical, and biblical subjects. He also produced decorative paintings for public facilities, reflecting the academic traditions prevalent in his period.

Armitage's artistic practice involved large-scale compositions depicting narratives from antiquity and scripture. His oeuvre also included Orientalist themes, as evidenced by his circa 1855 studies of Turkish architecture and figures, such as A group of houses, a minaret and cypress trees and Türbes in the Royal Cemetery of the Muradiye (Murad II), Bursa.
