Collection: Eero Järnefelt
Erik "Eero" Nikolai Järnefelt (1863–1937) was a Finnish painter and art professor. Born in Wyborg and dying in Helsinki, Järnefelt worked primarily in the Realist style. He received medals at the Paris Exposition Universelle in 1889 and 1900, taught art at the University of Helsinki, and served as chairman of the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts.
Järnefelt is recognized for his portraits and landscapes, particularly those depicting the area around Koli National Park in North Karelia, Finland. His oeuvre also includes naturalistic folk life paintings. These works represent Finnish realism from the 1890s and are considered part of the nation's collective visual memory.
Järnefelt was a significant figure during the "golden age" of Finnish art, spanning the period from 1880 to 1910. He was regarded as a national artist. He was also the brother-in-law of the composer Jean Sibelius.
