Collection: Elbridge Ayer Burbank
Elbridge Ayer Burbank, an American painter, was born on August 10, 1858, in Harvard, United States, and died on April 21, 1949, in San Francisco. He undertook art studies in Chicago before traveling to Munich, Germany, in his thirties for further training with German artists. Burbank dedicated his career to depicting Native Americans.
Burbank created over 1200 portraits of Native Americans, representing 125 different tribes. He is documented as the only artist to paint the war chief Geronimo from life. His body of work includes both sketches and paintings, focusing on individual likenesses.
A significant portion of Burbank's portraits of North American Indigenous peoples are exhibited in the Hubbell Home in Arizona.
