Collection: Elias Martin
Elias Martin (1739–1818) was a Swedish genre, history, and landscape painter and engraver from Stockholm. He began his career as a decorative artist, later turning to landscape painting after travels to Paris and London between 1768 and 1780. Martin served as a professor of landscape painting at the Stockholm Art Academy from 1785 to 1814 and was an associated member of the British Royal Academy. His work is associated with early Romanticism.
Martin developed a distinctive approach to landscape, producing vigorous compositions where light, air, and trees held prominence. He is recognized for his watercolor paintings of Stockholm and oil landscapes that feature romantic lighting effects. A skilled colorist, his cityscapes, castle views, and natural scenes are noted for their beautiful depiction of illumination. His painting style was fresh and lyrical, particularly evident in his washes and watercolors.
Nationalencyklopedin identifies Martin as Sweden's "first great landscape painter," establishing a foundational role in the genre. His atmospheric landscapes, with their emphasis on light and natural elements, foreshadowed the romantic sensibilities of the subsequent century.
