Collection: Ellen Day Hale
Ellen Day Hale (1855–1940) was an American Impressionist painter and printmaker from Boston. She pursued art studies in Paris and resided in Paris, London, and Boston throughout her adult life. Her work was exhibited at the Paris Salon and the Royal Academy of Arts.
Hale's artistic approach was influenced by Impressionism, yet she maintained a refined technique in her painting. As a printmaker, she pioneered color etching in the United States with artist Gabrielle Clements in the late 1880s.
Beyond her artistic practice, Hale authored "History of Art: A Study of the Lives of Leonardo, Michelangelo, Raphael, Titian, and Albrecht Dürer." She mentored a subsequent generation of New England female artists, contributing to their broader acceptance in the art world.
