Collection: Ellen Emmet Rand
Ellen Emmet Rand (née Ellen Gertrude Emmet) was an American painter and illustrator, born in San Francisco in 1875 and deceased in New York in 1941. She received her artistic training at the Cowles Art School in Boston and the Art Students League in New York City. Later, she studied with sculptor Frederick William MacMonnies in England and France.
Rand specialized in portraiture, completing over 500 works during her career. Her sitters included President Franklin D. Roosevelt, artist Augustus Saint-Gaudens, and her cousins Henry James and William James. She also contributed illustrations to publications such as Vogue Magazine and Harper's Weekly.
The William Benton Museum of Art at the University of Connecticut maintains a collection of her painted works. The University of Connecticut and the Archives of American Art at the Smithsonian Institution also hold collections of her papers, photographs, and drawings. Rand was awarded a Beck Gold Medal by the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.
