Collection: Emanuel de Witte

Emanuel de Witte (1617–1692) was a Dutch painter born in Alkmaar. He received early training in geometry from his father and joined the local Guild of St. Luke in 1636. After residing in Rotterdam, he studied with Evert van Alst in Delft, where he was active from 1641 to 1649 before relocating to Amsterdam. De Witte specialized in architectural painting, particularly church interiors, marking a late phase of this genre in the Netherlands.

De Witte's approach to church interiors contrasted with that of Pieter Jansz Saenredam, who emphasized architectural accuracy. De Witte instead focused on conveying the atmosphere of these spaces, utilizing rich perspective, vibrant color, and distinctive light. He often incorporated figures illuminated by sunlight within his compositions. Although fewer in number, he also produced genre paintings.
