Collection: Emanuel Gottlieb Leutze

Emanuel Gottlieb Leutze (1816–1868) was a German-born American history painter. Born in Schwäbisch-Gmünd, Württemberg, Germany, he later moved to America as a child. He is associated with the Düsseldorf school of painting. Leutze died in Washington, D.C.

Leutze specialized in oil on canvas history paintings, often depicting American historical events. His 1851 work, Washington Crossing the Delaware, exemplifies his approach to historical narrative. Another work, Sir Walter Raleigh Parting with His Wife, dates to 1846.

Leutze also executed frescoes for the Capitol in Washington. His painting Washington Crossing the Delaware became a widely reproduced image of an American historical event.
