Collection: Emanuel Leutze

Emanuel Leutze (1816–1868) was a German-born American history painter. Born in Schwäbisch-Gmünd, Württemberg, he is associated with the Düsseldorf school of painting. He died in Washington, D.C.

Leutze specialized in large-scale history paintings, often depicting American historical events. His oil on canvas Washington Crossing the Delaware (1851) became a widely reproduced image of a significant historical moment. He also painted European historical subjects, such as Sir Walter Raleigh Parting with His Wife (1846).

Leutze's work included monumental commissions, with frescoes adorning the halls of the Capitol in Washington, D.C.
