Collection: Emmanuel Tzanes
Emmanuel Tzanes (1610–1690), a Greek Renaissance iconographer, author, and clergyman, spent the latter half of his life in Venice. There, he served as parish priest of the church of San Giorgio dei Greci and was a member of the Flanginian School. Tzanes painted icons in the style of the Cretan school, integrating influences from contemporary Venetian painting.
Tzanes was a prolific artist, with over 130 extant works located in public foundations, private collections, churches, and monasteries across Greece. His oeuvre includes The Holy Towel, completed in 1659, which is considered a significant example of his work. He collaborated with fellow Cretan School artist Philotheos Skoufos and was the brother of painter Konstantinos Tzanes and poet Marinos Tzanes.
