Collection: Ephraim Moses Lilien
Ephraim Moses Lilien (1874–1925) was a Polish-Jewish graphic artist, illustrator, and printmaker. Born in Drogobytsch, he worked as a painter, engraver, and photographer. Lilien's work is associated with Art Nouveau, also known as Jugendstil or Secession, and he is identified as an early Zionist artist.
Lilien's artistic output frequently engaged with Jewish and Zionist themes, often presented through ornamental graphic works and exlibris. His illustrations for the Bible combine elements of Symbolism and Jugendstil. As a graphic artist, he produced detailed engravings and illustrations, also working as a photographer.
Lilien undertook several journeys to Palestine in 1906, 1910, and 1914. During 1916 and 1917, he served as a war artist and photographer in the Near East for the Austro-Hungarian army. He was involved in the founding of the Bezalel school art movement in Jerusalem and taught there briefly.
