Collection: Eric Ravilious

Eric William Ravilious (1903 –1942) was a British painter, designer, book illustrator, and wood-engraver. Born in London, he spent his formative years in Sussex.

Ravilious produced watercolours depicting English landscapes, such as the South Downs and Castle Hedingham. His approach to English landscape and vernacular art integrated a modernist sensibility with clarity.

During World War II, Ravilious served as a war artist. He died on active service in 1942 when the aircraft he was in was lost off Iceland, making him the first British war artist to perish in the conflict.
