Collection: Ernst Fries

Ernst Fries (1801–1833) was a German painter, draftsman, watercolourist, etcher, printmaker, and lithograph. Born in Heidelberg, he later died in Karlsruhe. He was identified as part of the "triumvirate of Heidelberg Romanticism," alongside Karl Philipp Fohr and Carl Rottmann. His artistic output represents a stylistic transition from Romanticism to Realism.

Fries primarily focused on landscape painting. His oeuvre demonstrates a shift from the expressive qualities of Romanticism towards a more objective depiction characteristic of Realism. The series Six Views of Heidelberg Castle (1820) illustrates his engagement with local topography and architectural subjects, rendered with developing precision.
