Collection: Eugène Jansson

Eugène Fredrik Jansson (1862–1915) was a Swedish painter born in Stockholm. He initially worked in a style associated with Symbolism, creating night-time land- and cityscapes. These early works were often dominated by shades of blue, earning him the moniker "blåmålaren" or "the blue-painter."

Jansson's artistic output shifted significantly around 1904. While his earlier period focused on atmospheric, blue-toned urban and natural scenes, his later career was primarily dedicated to painting male nudes. This later phase of his work has led to his identification by queer commentators as Sweden's first gay artist.
