Collection: Ferdinand Leeke

Ferdinand Leeke (1859–1937) was a German painter born in Burg bei Magdeburg. He received his artistic training at the Munich Academy, studying under Ludwig von Herterich, Sándor Liezen-Mayer, and Alexander von Wagner. Leeke became associated with academic painting, primarily depicting scenes from Wagnerian operas.

Around 1889, Siegfried Wagner, son of the composer Richard Wagner, commissioned Leeke to create a series of paintings illustrating scenes from ten of Wagner's operas. This commission established Leeke's focus on dramatic narrative subjects, rendered with the precise draftsmanship and compositional clarity characteristic of academic art.
