Francesco Hayez (10 February 1791 – 12 February 1882) was an Italian painter. He is considered one of the leading artists of Romanticism in mid-19th-century Milan, and is renowned for his grand historical paintings, political allegories, and portraits.

He studied under Teodoro Matteini, Lattanzio Querena, and Francesco Maggiotto. His style took its cues from Gregorio Lazzarini. Among his canonical works are Ruth, The Two Foscari, Portrait of Massimo d’Azeglio, and Crucifix and the Magdalene kneeling and crying. He worked primarily in portrait painting and history painting. His work is rooted in Orientalism and Troubadour style.
