Collection: Frank Bernard Dicksee

Sir Francis Bernard Dicksee (1853–1928) was an English painter and illustrator. Born and active in London, he worked during the Victorian era. Dicksee is primarily associated with dramatic literary, historical, and legendary scenes, and his style often aligned with the Pre-Raphaelite aesthetic, despite the movement's decline by his birth.

Dicksee's artistic output encompassed both grand narrative compositions and portraits. He depicted subjects drawn from literature, history, and mythology, often imbued with a theatrical quality. Concurrently, he painted portraits of fashionable women, a practice that contributed to his contemporary success. Works like Hesperia (1889) exemplify his engagement with allegorical and classical themes.

Dicksee was recognized within the British art establishment, eventually serving as President of the Royal Academy. He received the KCVO honor and was knighted, reflecting his standing in the art world of his time.
