Collection: Frank Cadogan Cowper

Frank Cadogan Cowper (1877–1958) was an English painter and illustrator of portraits, historical, and literary scenes. Born decades after the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood's founding, Cowper's artistic practice continued to align with their aesthetic principles, earning him the description "The Last Pre-Raphaelite."

Cowper's work, executed in both watercolor and oil, maintained a focus on detailed narrative compositions and evocative imagery characteristic of Pre-Raphaelite art. He frequently depicted subjects from history and literature, alongside his portrait commissions. His illustrative output included contributions to Sir Sidney Lee's The Imperial Shakespeare.

Despite being too young to join the original Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, Cowper's art sustained their romantic and symbolic sensibilities well into the 20th century, long after many contemporaries had moved towards other artistic currents.
