Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi (2 August 1834 – 4 October 1904) was a French sculptor and painter. He is best known for designing Liberty Enlightening the World, commonly known as the Statue of Liberty, in New York City, United States.
Jean-François Soitoux and Antoine Étex taught him. His best-known works include Lion of Belfort, Fontaine Bartholdi, Statue of Liberty, and Lafayette and Washington. Within the Realism tradition, he is associated with Academic Art.
