Collection: Frederic William Burton

Frederic William Burton (1816 –1900) was an Irish painter and curator, born in County Wicklow and dying in London. He served as the third director of the National Gallery, London, for two decades starting in 1874. His painting was influenced by Pre-Raphaelitism.

Burton primarily worked in watercolor, focusing on portraiture and figure painting. His notable watercolors include The Aran Fisherman's Drowned Child (1841) and The Meeting on the Turret Stairs (1864), both held by the National Gallery of Ireland.

As director of the National Gallery from 1874 to 1894, Burton played a significant role in the institution's development during the Victorian era.
