Collection: Frederick Goodall
Frederick Goodall (1822–1904) was an English painter primarily of figure subjects, often executed on a large scale. He produced numerous genre and historical paintings. Goodall exhibited at the Royal Academy 27 times between 1838 and 1859, becoming an Associate of the Royal Academy (ARA) in 1852 and a full Royal Academician (RA) in 1863.
Goodall's artistic practice included visits to Egypt in 1858 and 1870, which provided material for both Biblical subjects and depictions of contemporary Egyptian life. This engagement with Orientalist themes broadened his repertoire beyond traditional genre and historical scenes.
Goodall experienced considerable success for much of his career. However, his painting style eventually fell from public favor, leading to his declaration of bankruptcy in 1902. His family included several other notable painters, including his father, two brothers, a sister, and two sons.
