Collection: George Clausen

George Clausen (1852–1944) was a British artist born in London and died in Newbury. He worked extensively in oil and watercolour, and as a graphic artist producing etchings, mezzotints, drypoints, and occasional lithographs. Clausen was knighted in 1927. His artistic approach was significantly influenced by Impressionism.

Clausen developed a naturalistic style, frequently portraying rural life and the labor of agricultural workers, as exemplified by his Study for 'The Gleaners Coming Home'. His thematic range also extended to industrial subjects and wartime efforts, such as in Making Guns: Where the guns are made.

Clausen became an associate of the Royal Academy of Arts in 1895, achieving full membership in 1905.
