Collection: Georges Antoine Rochegrosse
Georges Antoine Rochegrosse (1859–1938) was a French painter, decorator, and illustrator born in Versailles. He initially established himself as a historical painter, reflecting an academic approach to grand narratives and subjects prevalent in French art of his time.
Rochegrosse later developed a distinctive style that incorporated Symbolist and Orientalist themes. He depicted subjects with a rich, often exotic sensibility, frequently featuring women in Middle Eastern-inspired settings. Beyond painting, he also worked as an engraver and designed original artwork for opera posters, showcasing his versatility across different media.
His contributions to French art were recognized with the Légion d'honneur in 1892. Rochegrosse spent a significant part of his later life in El Biar, Algeria, a location that likely influenced his Orientalist output, making him a distinctive figure among his contemporaries.
