Collection: Gobinda Chandra Roy
Gobinda Chandra Roy was an Indian painter active in the late 19th century, associated with the Kalighat painting style. His works exemplify this folk art tradition that originated in Kolkata, West Bengal.
Roy's paintings frequently depicted Hindu mythological narratives, including "Jatayu hinders Ravana’s chariot trying to prevent Sita’s abduction" (c. 1890) and "Das Avataras, Ten Incarnations of Vishnu" (c. 1890), both from a Kalighat album. He also created genre scenes, such as "A Barber Cleaning the Ear of a Courtesan" (c. 1890).
