Collection: Hermann Abeking
Hermann Abeking was born in Berlin on 26 August 1882 and died there on 4 July 1939. He trained as a draughtsman, caricaturist, and graphic artist, working primarily in illustration and portraiture.
His professional activity spanned the late German Empire and the Weimar Republic, with commissions including official portraits of Friedrich Wilhelm, Crown Prince of Germany, executed in 1870-1879.
Abeking’s graphic work favoured ink and wash techniques, often applied to satirical or allegorical subjects. His 1918 drawing Wiedergutmachung von Unrecht addressed post-war reparations, while his illustrations for periodicals employed sharp contour lines and minimal shading to isolate figures against plain grounds.
