Collection: Jakub Schikaneder

Jakub Schikaneder (1855–1924) was a Czech painter and art professor, born and deceased in Prague. He received mentorship from Gabriel von Max, a Prague artist and professor of history painting. In 1881, Schikaneder contributed to the decoration of the National Theatre in Prague. His work aligns with the artistic trends of Symbolism, Romanticism, and Realism.

Schikaneder's oeuvre comprises atmospheric, soft, and sorrowful genre scenes. His pieces frequently explore melancholy and moody themes, reflecting a distinct artistic sensibility that bears resemblance to Symbolism.

A significant portion of Schikaneder's work has been lost. He remained largely unknown to Czech society during his lifetime, with his art experiencing a rediscovery only in 1998.
