Collection: James Carroll Beckwith

James Carroll Beckwith (1852–1917) was an American painter born in Hannibal, Missouri. He received his training in Europe, notably studying with Émile Auguste Carolus-Duran. Beckwith's Naturalist style, often infused with impressionistic tendencies, led to his recognition in American art during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. He maintained a close association with John Singer Sargent.

Beckwith's artistic output included landscapes, portraits, and genre scenes, alongside wall paintings. His stylistic approach spanned from academic rigor to impressionistic fluidity, reflecting the breadth of his artistic interests and education. In addition to his painting, Beckwith was also active as an art teacher.
