Collection: Jāzeps Grosvalds

Jāzeps Grosvalds (1891–1920) was a Latvian painter born in Riga, considered a pioneer of modernism in Latvian painting. His style integrated European Modernism and Abstract elements with a distinct Latvian influence. He spent a significant portion of his life abroad.

Grosvalds was active in the "Zaļā puķe" art circle and the Riga Artists' Group. He primarily painted portraits and, during World War I, focused on themes of Latvian refugees and riflemen, creating thematic cycles such as "Bēgļi" and "Latviešu strēlnieki." His *Tirailleurs* series (1916-1917) is recognized within the Latvian Cultural Canon.

Grosvalds's work is represented in the Latvian National Museum of Art. He was the son of diplomat Fridrihs Grosvalds and the younger brother of art critic Oļģerts Grosvalds.
