Collection: John Collier
John Maler Collier (1850–1934) was an English painter and writer. He received his education at Eton College and studied painting in Paris with Jean-Paul Laurens, as well as at the Munich Academy, commencing in 1875. Collier's artistic practice aligned with the Pre-Raphaelite style.
Collier was a significant portrait painter of his generation, also creating works with mythological and historical themes. His approach often involved a detailed, narrative quality. An example of his engagement with historical subjects is the painting Lady Godiva.
Collier's personal life had connections to the scientific community, as he married two daughters of the biologist Thomas Henry Huxley.
