Collection: John Philip Simpson
John Philip Simpson was born in 1782 in London, where he trained as a portraitist. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1807 until his death in 1847, specializing in oil portraits of British aristocrats and theatrical figures.
Simpson painted "The Captive Slave" (1827), a portrait of the African-American actor Ira Aldridge in the role of Oroonoko, using chiaroscuro to model the figure against a dark ground. His technique combined smooth glazes with precise drapery folds, a method he applied to both individual and group portraits, including "I Will Fight" (1824), a depiction of a naval officer.
