John Rogers Herbert (1810–1890) was an English painter. He is primarily noted for his role as a precursor to Pre-Raphaelitism, developing an individual painting style that significantly influenced the artists who would form the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood.
Herbert's oeuvre frequently engaged with dramatic scenes and religious subjects. Despite an early career marked by financial difficulties following his father's death, he achieved considerable recognition and established his artistic approach by his mid-twenties.
A notable aspect of his later career involved extensive fresco commissions for Westminster Palace. However, many of these works suffered deterioration due to issues with the chosen materials. His thematic interests and stylistic innovations provided a significant precedent for the subsequent Pre-Raphaelite movement.
