Collection: József Rippl-Rónai

József Rippl-Rónai (1861 –1927) was a Hungarian painter, graphic artist, and designer. Born and deceased in Kaposvár, he trained in Munich under J. Herterich from 1884 and in Paris with M. von Munkácsy from 1887. He was an early Hungarian exponent of artistic modernism, associated with Post-Impressionism and the Nabis group.

Rippl-Rónai developed a style influenced by Post-Impressionism and Fauvism. His oeuvre includes domestic scenes and portraits, such as his Portrait of Aristride Maillol (c. 1890). He worked across painting, graphic arts, and design, contributing to the Art Nouveau period.

After 1902, Rippl-Rónai was primarily active in Kaposvár and Budapest. He is considered a pioneer of modern painting in Hungary.
