Collection: Lawrence Alma-Tadema

Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema (born Lourens Alma Tadema, 1836–1912) was a Dutch-born painter who trained at the Royal Academy of Antwerp, Belgium. He settled in London, England, in 1870, becoming a British denizen in 1873. He worked within the academic tradition, creating scenes from everyday life in the ancient world.

Alma-Tadema specialized in classical subjects, particularly depictions of the Roman Empire, ancient Greece, and ancient Egypt. His paintings featured languorous figures set against detailed marbled interiors or Mediterranean seascapes. He was noted for his draftsmanship and accurate portrayals of Classical antiquity.

Alma-Tadema's work was widely popular during his lifetime. After his death, his style fell out of favor, but since the 1960s, his contributions to Victorian painting have been re-evaluated and appreciated.
