Léon-Henri-Marie Frédéric (1856–1940) was a Belgian Symbolist painter. Born in Brussels and dying in Schaerbeek, Frédéric's early oeuvre combined Christian mysticism with pantheistic themes. His later works increasingly reflected social concerns.
Frédéric's artistic singularity emerged through his thematic focus, initially exploring Christian mysticism alongside pantheistic subjects. Subsequently, his canvases shifted to address social concerns. His painting style also showed a clear influence from fifteenth and sixteenth-century Flemish art and broader Renaissance painting traditions. Beyond these, he depicted historical scenes, religious subjects, portraits, and landscapes.
