Collection: Luigi Querena

Luigi Querena (1824–1887) was an Italian painter born in Venice. He enrolled at the Venice Academy of Fine Arts at age 12, studying under Federico Moja. Querena followed his father, Lattanzio, also a painter, and established himself as a vedute painter, with contemporary critics noting his revival of the style of Canaletto.

Querena's oeuvre included views of the Venetian lagoon and its monuments, often incorporating scenes from literature or contemporary life. He also engaged with political themes, beginning a series of eight works in 1850, arrayed as a Cosmorama, which depicted Venice's resistance against Austrian rule.

An active participant in the Venice Academy of Fine Arts exhibitions, Querena became an honorary member in 1857. He also presented his work at the Brera Academy in Milan, the Società Promotrice di Belle Arti in Genoa, and national exhibitions in Naples, Turin, and Milan.
